(一) 貴州
2005年9月5日，美國康德基金會一行5人開始參訪貴州希望工程，9月5日至8日，4天之內我們參訪了貴州、黔東南和黔東的康達、龍華、靜貞、康德等4所希望小學。每天平均要坐8個小時以上的車程，沿河路況尚好時，九拐十八彎彎得你頭暈腦漲、膽颤心驚;盤山路況不好時，巔來晃去,晃得你七荤八素、渾身是沙。
但是唯一相同的是窗外美麗的梯田，順著梯田往上看，你可以看到站在群山頂端的學校,巍然佇立;順著梯田往遠看，你可以看見群山之中最好的一棟建築,睥睨全村，那就是代表村民未來遠景希望的象徵—希望小學。
在這裡生活的少數民族，大部分仍穿著傳統服飾，梳著傳統的髮髻，未曾剪過的長髮，用一隻梳子高高的盤立在頭頂上。人們提著裝豬仔的竹簍，背著裝青菜雜糧的竹籃在趕市集，這一幕幕就像是電影場景般的覺得有些不真實，但卻是他們真真實實的生活現況。在21世紀的今天，對這種生活，你要改善還是要保留？不禁令人迷惑!
每當一所新的希望小學建成時，政府會把附近村子原來的幾所村辦小學的學生，集中合併到希望小學來上課。住的較遠的孩子就安排住在學校，自己帶了爐子、每周回家帶米、土豆（馬鈴薯），早上起來煮一鍋飯配一鍋土豆，就可吃上一天。讀書對他們是這麼的艱難!反觀都市和平地的孩子上下學，卻又是如此的輕鬆自然，真令人不勝唏噓啊!
(二) 湖南
9月10~12三天，康德基金會二人在湖南省的湘西自治州，繼續此行希望工程的參訪工作，9月10日在鳳凰縣會見了康德基金會捐助的初二苗族女生龍元英，當天下午轉赴張家界市。
9月11日和12日，我們由張家界市出發，分別拜訪永順縣廣宜希望小學和桑植縣的志敏希望小學。湖南湘西一帶，一般省道、縣道都比貴州明顯好得很多，但山區山路的路況則更差了，一路上山都是Off Road，每天回來後，晚上躺在床上就起不來了。
湖南省是魚米之鄉，湘西自治州是湖南最貧困的地區，但湖南並非全境是山，還有平原、河、湖等廣大的富饒之地，這與全境為山、擺脫不了大山限制的貴州並不相同。故湖南人在反思一個問題:明明可以到平地或都市工作生存，為何要死守大山?這些窮山老林根本沒有經濟生產的價值，住在山裡的人不過是勉強養活自己而已(甚至連自己都養活不了)！政府花幾百萬、幾千萬去修這麼一條毫無意義的山路，不如設法用教育的方法提昇山區人民的能力和素質，使他們有能力走出大山，否則任由人民隨意到山裡濫墾濫伐，還要在後面跟著修路、搞水土保持，這應該不是解決問題的根本辦法。
因此湖南省青少年基金會從2004年起，對湖南省希望工程就有新的做法，原則上他們要使大山的孩子走出來，一個人出來以後，可以帶動全家走出大山;所以目前深山的村辦學校，已改為只教一至二年級學生（廣宜小學一到四年級學生只有７０餘人，志敏小學全校一至二年級包括學前班，更只剩下16個學生，1個教師，堪稱全球最小的小學），三年級以上要學英文、美術、電腦等專業課程，學生必須下山集中到鎮中心小學讀書(以逼使山區村民為子女教育出山，最後達到封山育林、水土保持、環境保育的目的)。
目前湖南省的教育目標是：<九加二>，就是九年義務教育後再教二年的職業教育課來培訓專長，目標是畢業後學生都能找到一份每月人民幣1,000元以上的工作，而非只靠原始勞工力去打工。所以現階段湖南省青基會希望工程推行的重點，不是鼓勵捐方到湖南的深山老林中捐建一所新學校，而是希望把外界的愛心資源，集中放在鎮中心小學的教學樓、宿舍、食堂或電腦、師資等軟體設備上，這比貴州只能困守山區求存的條件好多了，當然湖南的教育理念畢竟還是比貴州先進了一大步。
我們與湖南省青基少年基金會白波副秘書長，在推動教育的方式和理念上相談甚歡，已請其完整地提供湖南省青少年基金會的一些具體計劃和作法，希望2006年時，美國康德基金會能為湖南省的教育工作，提供更為務實和有效的貢獻。
